At HHG we are constantly striving to push the boundaries of what drums can do, both sonically and Visually. This drum is an attempt to nudge those boundaries a little further. We started with a shell that features two different species, then using a sharp Bowl gouge and a wood lathe meticulously shaped this drum to enhance the way it sounds and looks. Our goal with the removal of extra stock from the shell is to both lighten the instrument to allow it to resonate more freely while simultaneously darkening the Timbre of the drum.
This drum is made from ipe and zebra wood, two of the most dense and hardwood species on the planet, especially pay which is commonly used and outdoor applications for its excellent durability and weather resistance.
Because this wood is so hard and dense, it works very well in Musical applications. The robust characteristics of this wood species make for a drum that has a huge amount of attack, bite, and punch. Additionally, utilizing by Stave shell Construction we were able to achieve additional sensitivity, articulation, and musicality.
The individual segments of wood, or staves, are hand and selected, and arranged with care to produce the most striking visual pattern possible, while maintaining the grain Integrity from its original flow in the board in which the drum was made from.
This drum is totally unique piece, made from arguably the hardest wood in the world. It will be an absolute workhorse, in both live and studio settings.
The drum pictured in this listing was custom-built for a client, and it's a 12 X 7 size, featuring our proprietary hhg single point lugs, vintage style strainer, diecast air vent and butt plate, and our reimagined internal tone control. If you decide to purchase this drum today, we will be rebuilding it from scratch.
This creates the opportunity to customize the drum to your specs. You can get whatever type of Hardware you would like on the drum, we can change the size of the drum, and we can do whatever type of finish you can imagine! Some of these changes might affect the price of the drum.
