Purple heart has long been a great choice for musical instruments. In this drum we coupled it with another unique tonewood, Bubinga.
purple heart is a very dense and hard wood species. It has a natural deep purple color that gets better with time, the purple color gets deeper and darker with exposure to UV light. Bubinga, similarly, is a very dense and hard species. It is incredibly rare, and often nearly impossible to come by in anything other than very small pieces. Because of its dense and homogeneous nature it is always been a Top top choice for instrument makers.
this drum is constructed using larger staves made from purple heart, with a thin Bubinga spline in between each piece of purple heart. The combination of these two Woods is visually striking, as well as a great marriage of to subtly different tonewoods that make for vibrant, Lively, and musical drum.
To take things a step further with his instrument, we decided to build custom matching wood hoops utilizing the exact same wood species. Our handmade wood Hoops are constructed in a segmented fashion to make them incredibly strong, yet incredibly light. Because there is more contact between the drumhead and oops, they naturally create a more staccato and focused sound. Also, the visual continuity between the shell and the Hoops is second to none.
The drum pictured features our signature oil rubbed bronze single point lugs, and black nickel diecast Hoops, tension rods, strainer, butt plate, and air vent. However, we can make this dream for you with any hardware that you would like.
the drum in the pictures features a satin oil finish, we would also be more than happy to do a high gloss finish or any type of colored lacquer that you might be interested in.
